Help answer the question about Automotive Reviews
Which automotive repair scan tool to buy?I'm looking to buy a new or used automotive scan tool (not a code reader). I currently have AUTOTAP which is a fairly nice OBD-II PC based scanner but it is unidirectional (read only). I'm prepared to spend up to $3K for a bidirectional scan tool that will cover all OBD-II models- doesn't have to cover OBD-I but would be nice.
The problem is I'm having a hella-hard time finding information, reviews, etc on all the choices. Should I buy a MAC Mentor or a Nemesys? Why or why not?
Thanks. In advance, I'd like to try and filter out as many MORONS and IDIOTS as possible because it seems this website is absolutely filled to capacity with people who have no idea what they are talking about. If you aren't an auto tech, if you have never used a scan tool, are 16yrs old, or if your dad works at dealer then MOVE ON and let someone who actually knows what they are talking about answer the question.
Any personal recommendations supported by links to more information would be great.
Bobweb, you idiot, didn't I JUST SAY that I wanted a BIDIRECTIONAL SCAN TOOL??? Autoxray is unidirectional.
Gosh. Idiots. This is EXACTLY why I only want people who know what they are talking about to answer.
Idiots.
Gosh.

3.0 out of 5 stars A THREE FOR EFFORT, July 14, 2009
By MR. SIR "COOPER" (Dallas, Tx) – See all my reviews
I recently purchased this product via Summit Racing in order to enhance the security system already on the vehicle. I must admit the product doesn't lack effort on the part of its designers, but falls short in a couple of areas.
1. As with most steering wheel locks, can be easily defeated by simple cutting the steering wheel and discarding the product. Although the alarm is loud, 130db isn't sufficient enough to cause a loud disturbence. Tried from inside the house while listening to the alarm. Sounds like a smoke alarm siren to some degree. Alerts for 40 seconds, and then resets itself.
2. The unit is battery operated by nature, but there are two screws located on the battery compartment. Know where I'm going?? Anyhow, they are standard phillips heads, allowing for either the battery to be removed or wires cut to siren doing a theft of the vehicle.
Overall, it is a decent product, considering replacement screws, requiring a hex key, will only cost a couple of bucks. 2. Theft-deterrent not theft-proof are the key words.
I recommend the club 491 (for cars and trucks) or the Club 493 for motorcycles and smaller tires. The earlier of which I've purchased and should receive this coming Friday.
*** As with any theft-deterrent, if a thief wants it, they'll get it and you if necessary. No product is fool-proof or perfect.
Hopefully my first review will help someone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great & very practical wheel lock, August 4, 2009

We have been using this Gorilla Automotive 910 Gorilla Grip III Steering Wheel Lock with Remote Control since Feb. 08 and I highly recommend it. It is a solid and well made product that is very easy and quick to put on and take off the steering wheel so you actually don't hesitate put it on even if you just go in a store for a few minutes + the added remote motion triggered alarm is a bonus in case someone makes it inside your car and start trying to remove the Gorilla Steering Lock. The alarm makes a very high pitch sound that would be hard to stand for too long while in the car trying to mess around with the lock. This lock is also highly visible which is a good deterrent inviting thieves to go for another car without such protection. I personally think that this Gorilla Steering Wheel Lock offers a much better protection than all the Club like devices that are on the market because it is very easy to remove a Club or similar system just by sawing the steering wheel with a little metal saw and then slightly bending the wheel to remove the Club and then bending back the steering wheel. On the other hand the Gorilla Steering Lock has a much wider grab on the steering wheel and most likely would require to cut the wheel on both sides of the lock in order to remove it. One: that takes longer, two: it is not so discret driving around with a big chuck of the steering wheel missing and three: cutting the wheel will trigger the alarm.
